Another key to a Feng Shui living room is to make sure that your seats are octagonal or circular in shape as opposed to squared off and sharp. Putting chairs in a blocked off style makes the room feel tight and restrained as opposed to open and welcoming. While circular seating is not always an easy way to dress your room, it can be aided with the careful use of end tables. Many people use the half-circle approach to make it easier to keep all eyes facing the door and welcoming.
If you use your living area as a space where you watch television or movies often the placement of the furniture and TV or projector is even more important. Placing the television and seating furniture along opposite walls is often the best and possibly only real solution, proper placement of an area rug will help keep your room from visually shrinking. Place the area rug in front of or underneath the television then place the furniture along the opposite outside edge of the rug. This visually expands your floor space and will keep you from feeling too cramped. If possible, use a round or oval shaped rug to eliminate a boxy feel.
