Adelaide University Merger: Students and Staff Face Major Challenges in Degree Changes (2025)

Amidst the ongoing merger of the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, students and teaching staff are grappling with a myriad of challenges. This significant transformation, set to culminate in the creation of a single, larger Adelaide University by the start of next year, is impacting the academic experience of tens of thousands of students. The merger, which has been in the works for two years, is projected to accommodate an anticipated 70,000 students and 11,000 staff, making it one of the largest higher education institutions in the nation. The new university aims to bring substantial economic benefits to the state, with modeling suggesting an annual boost of $500 million to the local economy.

However, the transition has not been without its hurdles. Students, particularly those in the arts and niche subjects, are facing changes to their degrees, causing stress and uncertainty. The National Tertiary Education Union SA secretary, Dr. Andrew Miller, has expressed concerns about the communication surrounding course integration, describing it as 'clear as mud'. The timetabling for 2026 has left many distressed, with some courses disappearing without prior consultation.

Gabbi, a student who recently completed her second year of International Development at the University of Adelaide, made a deliberate decision to go part-time for her final year to balance work, savings, and personal commitments. However, an email from the university in February changed her plans. Her degree was reclassified as a Bachelor of Arts with a major in International Development, and her minor in gender studies was not recognized, despite the credits being transferred. Gabbi felt a strong sense of commitment to her original degree path and chose to study full-time in 2025, despite the challenges.

The university has established a dedicated Student Transition Support team to address individual inquiries, and a spokesperson assured that personalized study plans have been issued to students, with all plans to be received before December enrollments. However, the union is negotiating an enterprise agreement, emphasizing the need for harmonization of pay rates and recognition of staff efforts. The spokesperson from Adelaide University acknowledged the additional workload on staff and introduced support measures, including additional resources and encouragement to reconsider non-essential activities.

Despite the challenges, Gabbi acknowledges the benefits of the merger but is relieved to have graduated under the current system. She appreciates the university's efforts to ensure a smooth transition but has encountered numerous obstacles along the way.
