Who invented Muddy Buddies?
A difficult question to answer as General Mills says the recipe was created in 2002 but midwesterners swear puppy chow recipes have been around since the 60’s. Either way, we’re all thankful for this treat being invented because let’s face it- it’s simple, easy, and downright delicious!
Why is it called Puppy Chow?
I promise, this is not a treat for your dog, and is not made up of any dog food-like substances, but the name can feel offputting. Truth be told it’s only called puppy chow because it sort of resembles dog food. But a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, so no matter what this dish is called, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s awesome.
Is it puppy chow or muddy buddies?
As I said, it goes by many different names including but not limited to- puppy chow, monkey munch, reindeer chow (for the holidays) and muddy buddies. Depending on where you’re at it’s called something different.
What are muddy buddies made of?
Starting with a base of Chex mix cereal and building off of that we often have melted chocolate, butter, or peanut butter (or a mixture of those ingredients) added flavors and a final dusting of sugar (most popularly powdered sugar). Every recipe is both similar and different to others, and just fantastic enough that you can never be bored with the endless options and recipes!

- 6 cups Chex cereal
- ½ cup butter
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tbsp milk
- 1 small box Banana Cream pudding mix 3 ounce box
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
Instructions
Start by measuring the Chex mix cereal into a large bowl and set it aside.
Then, in a small saucepan, combine the butter, white chocolate chips, milk, and sweetened condensed milk, cook over medium heat. Continue to stir until smooth and the chocolate is melted.
Next, add in the dry pudding mix and gently whisk to combine. Remove the mixture from the heat.
Proceed to pour your melted butter and chocolate mixture over the top of the cereal and toss to coat. Pour ½ of the mixture at a time, toss and coat all the cereal well.
After that, sprinkle with the powdered sugar, ½ cup at a time, until you reach the desired coating of powdered sugar. I added ½ cup and stirred, then spread the mix down on waxed paper, and dusted with more powdered sugar, until it was all well coated.
Let the cereal mix cool for about 10 minutes, stir lightly, and dust with the remaining ½ cup of powdered sugar. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
BEST SERVED THE SAME DAY! This version of chex mix doesn’t last as long as others do. If you do want to prolong the life of it, you can refrigerate it, then serve slightly chilled.
