Why You’ll Love Making Homemade Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is one of the most straightforward spreads to make at home – all you need are peanuts and a food processor! In this homemade peanut butter recipe I’ve added a few more ingredients like honey and salt to add subtle sweetness and give it a slightly more unique and complex flavor. But you still just throw everything in your food processor and, as if by magic, creamy, spoonable peanut butter.

It’s so fun to make your own peanut butter, and once you try doing so you may not go back to buying a jar at the store! Here’s why you’ll love making peanut butter:

  • It’s so easy. Just throw everything into a food processor or blender (though I would recommend a high-powered one), and blend! That’s all there is to it.
  • Fun to customize. Follow my recipe as written or adapt it to your personal preferences. You can add more honey if you like sweeter peanut butter, try less salt, or switch out the honey for maple syrup.
  • Naturally gluten-free. This is a wonderful naturally gluten-free recipe for homemade peanut butter. All of the ingredients needed to make it are already gluten-free so you won’t need to make any adaptations.
  • Better than storebought. There are no strange ingredients or additives in this homemade peanut butter recipe. And even better, no preservatives! All you need are simple ingredients and you’ll be able to make the best peanut butter in just a few minutes.

Ingredients

Just a few ingredients are needed to make this luscious peanut butter. Don’t forget to check the recipe card at the end of this post for the full ingredient amounts:

  • Dry Roasted Unsalted Peanuts: Roasted peanuts give this homemade peanut butter a rich and deep peanut flavor. However, you could use unroasted peanuts if you wish. I would not use salted peanuts in this recipe because the final result would be too salty.
  • Honey: Honey gives this homemade peanut butter a floral sweetness. Use local honey when possible!
  • Sea Salt: You’ll use flaky, coarse sea salt in this recipe.
  • Avocado Oil:Or you can use another neutral oil.

How To Make Peanut Butter

My two-step method for making peanut butter is outlined below (the detailed directions are in the recipe card below):

  • Process the ingredients in a food processor. Add the peanuts, honey, and sea salt to a high-powered blender or food processor. Start by pulsing to break down the peanuts, then blend or process until it is smooth. This will take several minutes, and the outside of the blender may become warm to the touch.

  • Adjust the consistency. If it is not as smooth as you like, slowly stream in up to 1-2 Tablespoons of oil while it is blending in order to achieve your desired consistency.

How To Store Homemade Peanut Butter

Store honey sea salt peanut butter in an airtight container (I prefer to use a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid) at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. You can also store homemade peanut butter in the fridge for up to 2 months.

Tips for the Best Honey Peanut Butter

Here are a few tips you can follow when making peanut butter:

  • Process the peanut butter thoroughly. For the smoothest peanut butter, make sure you run the food processor long enough so that your end result is smooth, creamy peanut butter. You may also have to stop the blender periodically to scrape down the sides.
  • Only use fresh peanuts. Make sure that your peanuts are from a fresh jar. If you use old peanuts they may be rancid, which will give you peanut butter with an off taste.
  • Substitute maple syrup. You can easily swap the honey for maple syrup in equal amounts if you want a slightly different flavor.
  • Add chocolate. Make this more of a dessert peanut butter by drizzling in some chocolate syrup.
  • Make it crunchy. If you like crunchier peanut butter, reserve 1/2 cup of the peanuts and add them into the food processor after you’ve processed the other ingredients. Pulse the mixture once to combine the peanut without totally crushing them.
  • Use a blender. You can use a blender rather than a food processor if needed, but make sure it’s a high-powered blender so that the peanuts are processed completely.

Ways To Use Sea Salt and Honey Peanut Butter

There are so many ways to use sea salt and honey peanut butter, from smearing on apple slices or using it in a sandwich on gluten free bread. Here are a few of my favorite ways to use honey peanut butter:

  • Cookies. You can use your homemade peanut butter to make cookies like, of course, peanut butter cookies! My Gluten Free Peanut Butter Cookies, Peanut Butter Dulce de Leche Cookies, or Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies with Chocolate Chips recipes are a great way to incorporate homemade peanut butter.
  • Oatmeal. Swirl homemade peanut butter into oatmeal for extra protein and flavor. Or substitute it for the almond butter in my Almond Butter Chocolate Oatmeal recipe.
  • Smoothie. Add peanut butter to smoothies! Try my Peanut Butter Smoothie with Chocolate Chips, Peanut Butter and Jelly Smoothie, or Funky Monkey Dessert Smoothie, all of which call for peanut butter.
  • Cupcakes. Use my homemade peanut butter recipe to make Peanut Butter Frosting, then use the frosting to make Chocolate Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Frosting! Or make my fun Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcakes.
  • Granola. Tuck homemade peanut butter into my hearty and wholesome peanut butter granola recipe. Then layer it into a Peanut Butter and Jelly Yogurt Parfait.
  • Candy. Buckeyes are a wonderful candy made with peanut butter and chocolate. My take on peanut butter buckeyes has less sugar but tastes wonderful. And of course, you can stuff it into Peanut Butter Cups.
  • Ice cream. Homemade peanut butter is fabulous in homemade ice cream! My No-Churn Muddy Buddy Ice Cream or No-Churn Reese’s Ice Cream are recipes in which you can use your homemade peanut butter.

    Honey Sea Salt Peanut Butter

This Homemade Peanut Butter recipe is super easy and lightly sweetened with a little honey plus some flaky sea salt to make the flavors pop. And it takes just minutes to whip up in your food processor or blender.

    Prep: 10 minutes mins

    Total: 10 minutes mins

    Ingredients

    • 16 ounce jar of dry roasted unsalted peanuts
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • 1-2 teaspoons coarse sea salt
    • 1-2 tablespoons avocado oil or another neutral oil, optional

    Instructions

    • Add the peanuts, honey, and sea salt to a high-powered blender or food processor. Start by pulsing to break down the peanuts, then blend or process until it is smooth. This will take several minutes, and the outside of the blender may become warm to the touch. You may also have to stop the blender periodically to scrape down the sides. If it is not as smooth as you like, slowly stream in up to 1-2 tablespoons of oil while it is blending in order to achieve your desired consistency.

    • Place in a jar or other storage container and store in the refrigerator.

    Notes

It will become a little firm or thick in the refrigerator. If you eat natural peanut butter, you are familiar with this. Just let it come to room temperature, and it will be easy to spread again.
