Was it a fair call to blame Piastri alone for the crash? That's the question on every racing fan's mind after a dramatic collision took Charles Leclerc out of the race. But here's where it gets controversial: Leclerc himself believes the stewards' decision to penalize Oscar Piastri solely for the incident might be too harsh. And this is the part most people miss: Leclerc argues that Andrea Kimi Antonelli shares equal responsibility for the crash.
Leclerc's race ended abruptly after Piastri and Antonelli collided at the first corner following a Safety Car restart. The impact sent Antonelli's car careening into Leclerc's Ferrari, causing irreparable damage. At the time, both Piastri and Leclerc were attempting to overtake Antonelli. Leclerc pointed out that Antonelli should have given Piastri more space to navigate the corner safely.
In a post-race interview, Leclerc stated, “I agree we have a rule book, and the stewards do their best to interpret it. But in this case, I think Kimi was aware that Oscar was on the inside, even if he wasn’t fully alongside him. You can’t ignore someone’s presence just because they’re not side-by-side according to the rules. For me, it’s a 50-50 split in blame between Kimi and Oscar. Oscar doesn’t deserve all the fault here.”
Despite Leclerc’s perspective, the stewards ruled Piastri “wholly responsible” for the collision, imposing a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points. Their decision was based on Piastri’s failure to establish the required overlap before the apex, as outlined in the Driving Standard Guidelines. Piastri’s penalty now totals eight points, raising questions about the fairness of the ruling.
But is this penalty justified? The stewards explained that Piastri attempted to overtake Antonelli on the inside of turn one without achieving the necessary position. As he tried to avoid contact by braking, he locked up and collided with Antonelli, who then hit Leclerc. While the rules are clear, Leclerc’s insight adds a layer of complexity to the debate.
