I think the confectioners sugar is a planted joke to fool the unsuspecting. Most recipes do not include sugar after the boil. Watching those who make it at fudge shops do not usually put anything in after the boil besides special flavors. More sugar may need to be added in the beginning. Maybe this recipe has a reason for it. But i do not think that it is based on what those in Mackinac, Traverse City, or any where else do. My advice is put the chocolate and sugar in at the beginning. Heat it to a soft ball, cool and stir in pot or stir on a cool surface. If it does not set reheat to soft ball and try again. You could add small amounts of confectioners sugar during reheat if you think more is needed. Getting this right the first time takes experience. And some luck.

I followed the recipe to a tee, twice. It turned to dust both times. What did I do wrong?

figured it out for myself...use BUTTER not margarine, and (I don't know if this made a difference or not) Stir cocoa and icing sugar in, then beat with mixer. Turned out great the 2nd time...Good luck
