Imagine falling head over heels, swept away by a fairytale romance, only to discover it wasn't the happily ever after you envisioned. This is the reality for American singer-songwriter Brittany Porter, known as Brook Lynn, who is now seeking a divorce after a shocking revelation: she unknowingly entered into a legally binding Islamic marriage with Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, the former King of Malaysia.
Brook Lynn's story, as shared with the South China Morning Post, begins in January 2024, with a chance meeting that sparked an undeniable connection. She was charmed by his 'cute' British accent and the instant chemistry they shared. Their relationship quickly evolved into a whirlwind romance, filled with luxurious travel and extravagant gestures. "He flew me and my friends all around the world. He was so generous," she recalls.
But here's where it gets controversial... What she believed was an engagement celebration turned out to be a marriage ceremony under Islamic law. The Sultan proposed before their first trip to the Middle East, gifting her a blue diamond ring. During a trip to Oman, a religious ceremony was arranged, with Brook Lynn's companions present. "In my culture, the big ceremony is a wedding, which we planned for January 2025. So I was confused," she explained. She only recently learned that a nikah constitutes a marriage under Islamic law. "I didn’t realize how different the terminology and process would be under Islamic law. But the truth is, I was, and still am, his wife in the eyes of Allah," she shared on social media.
Upon returning to Malaysia, Brook Lynn was treated as a royal spouse, and the pressure mounted for her to produce a male heir. Sadly, she suffered a miscarriage, leading to increased conflict between them. Despite the growing distance, wedding plans were still in motion, but things took a turn when she tried to reconnect. "He blocked me on everything. He just texted my best friend saying it wasn’t going to work out," she remembers.
And this is the part most people miss... Brook Lynn hasn't heard from him since and is now seeking legal recognition of their separation. "I feel like this behavior is a pattern for him," she stated.
A Look at the Sultan's History: Sultan Muhammad V, currently the Sultan of Kelantan, reigned as Malaysia's king from 2016 to 2019. His past includes previous marriages, including one to Russian beauty queen Oxana Voevodina. He has a son with Voevodina.
Turning Pain Into Art: Despite the heartbreak, Brook Lynn has found solace and inspiration in her music. Her debut track, "Oh My Gosh," is directly inspired by her experience. "It’s been amazing, it’s been a healing journey for me, and really freeing," she said.
