Special Activities Mark Black History Month in D.C. Schools (2024)

Special classroom activities, assemblies and programs have been scheduled for February by many District of Columbia Public Schools to celebrate Black History Month. Activities scheduled are listed below. Readers are urged to contact the school before attending any activity since some changes may occur.

Bancroft Elementary School, 18th and Newton streets NW - Feb. 24, 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., an assembly program entitled "Rights of Americans," kindergarten through the sixth grade. Contact Dan Clifford or Betty hayes at 673-7280.

Brightwood Elementary School, 13th and Nicholson streets NW - Next Thursday, 9:30 a.m., second graders will sing, recite and parade , portraying outstanding black personalities in a "Black Awareness Program." Contact Norma Kelly at 576-6199.

Carver Elementary School, 45th and Lee streets NE - Feb. 24, 1:30 p.m., black history assembly, pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Contact Herman F. Roebuck at 724-4602.

Garnet C. Wilkinson Elementary School, Pomeroy Road and Erie Street Se - Feb. 28, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., fine arts exposition. Contact Clementine D. Homesley at 767-7313.

Harris Elementary School, 53rd and C streets SE - Tuesday, 1:45 p.m., Dotty Ponds and Company in a "Tribute to Paul Laurence Dunbar" with drama, music and dance. (Two Harris students are in the company.) Contact Florence P. Dagner at 767-7027.

Kenilworth Elementary School, 44th and Orr streets NE - Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., a program entitled "A Tribute to Black Leaders" which focuses on the accomplishments of blacks, past and present, in words, poems and music, grades three and four. Contact Warren N. Simms at 724-4643.

J.C. Nalle Elementary School, 50th and C streets SE - Tuesday, 1:15 p.m., travel lecture and exhibit on African countries and culture; Wednesday, 1:30 p.M., mock TV show hosting eight famous black Americans portrayed by fifth and sixth graders. Payne Elementary School, 15th and C streets SE - Tomorrow, 1:15 p.m., an assembly program depicting the history of black Americans through songs, dances, poems and skits, 10- and 11-year-old students. Contact Mrs. Washington or Miss Maxton at 899-6373.

River Terrace Elementary School, 34th and Dix streets NE - Monday through Feb. 24, each class will choose a black personality and present poems, songs, dance or report, pre-school through sixth grade. Contact Mrs. Evelyn Davis at 724-4589.

Rudolph Elementary School, 2nd and Hamilton streets NW - Today and tomorrow, "Afro-Expo," a variety of films, programs and dress-up day. Contact T. H Gloster at 576-6186.

Shadd Elementary School, 5601 E. Capitol St. SE - Tomorrow, 1:30 p.m., elementary and high school children will present a program entitled "When Colored People Sing." Contact Etrula M. Williams at 767-7017.

Stevens Elementary School, 21st and K streets NW - Feb. 24, 10 a.m. Stevens School will present its second Alumni Day program at Francis Junior High School auditorium. The fifth and sixth graders will present a program entitled "110 Years of Continuous Education," honoring former students, teachers and administrators of Stevens, Washington's first school for black students. West Elementary School, 14th and Farragut streets NW - Feb. 28, 2 p.m., seventh and eighth graders will present a program entitled "Our Tribute to Famous Black Americans," which will include songs, poetry and speeches. Contact Althea J. Williams at 576-6226.

Charles Young Elementary School, 24th Street and Benning Road NE - Tomorrow, 11 a.m. "All Hail Colonel Young," highlights in the life of the colonel, the naming of the school and rededication to the new Open Space School, grades four, five and six. Contact Mattie E. Spottswood at 724-4569.

Hart Junior High School, 601 Mississippi Ave. SE - Feb. 27, 9:15 a.m., an assembly program tracing the many accomplishments of Negroes from slavery to the present through music, dance and dramatic monologues, grades seven through nine. Contact Ethel Rivers at 767-7077.

Eastern High School, 17th and East Capitol streets NE - Feb. 28, 10 a.m., "Wise Up and Take Hold," a musical production by Eastern students. Contact Barbara Dodd at 724-4805.

Friendship Educational Center, S. Capitol Street and Livinston Road SE - Feb. 28, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., black review through slides, poetry, dance and singing, grades three through eight. Contact Judith Grove at 767-7182.

Webster Job Development Center, 10th and H streets NW - Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., black history displays with explanations by students; prizes to the best classroom projects at the Martin Luther King Library, Room A5, 16- to 21-year old trainable mentally retarded youth.
