Tatsuya Nakadai, the renowned Japanese actor, has passed away at the age of 92 in Tokyo. Born in 1932, Nakadai's career spanned decades, with his early work closely associated with directors Masaki Kobayashi and Akira Kurosawa. His journey began when Kobayashi discovered him at a Tokyo department store in the 1950s, where he worked as a sales assistant. Despite having no formal acting training, Nakadai quickly became a prominent figure in Japanese cinema, often portraying characters grappling with Japan's World War II legacy.
Nakadai's collaboration with Kurosawa led to international acclaim. Together, they crafted the Oscar-winning epic Ran (1985), where Nakadai portrayed a tragic feudal warlord. Prior to this, they collaborated on the Cannes Palme d'Or-winning film Kagemusha (1980). Nakadai's versatility extended beyond Kurosawa's films, as he appeared in a range of genres, including the Yakuza melodrama Onimasa (1982), the English-language Return from the River Kwai (1989), and the animated feature The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2012).
