I was chosen to receive a prize at our high school's speech and prize-giving day.Mr. Modjaka, himself, had informed me.I attended rehearsals, excitedly anticipating the big day.At last, the day arrived, my family beamed with pride as they were ushered into the assembly hall.They called out names in class order, starting from the A class. I was in C.I craned my neck over the queue as students walked up to the podium to receive their awards. When they reached my class, I stood rigidly in the line, waiting to hear mine.Silence.My classmates exchanged confused glances.My family looked on with a similar mix of confusion and concern.Approaching Mr. Modjaka, he apologized profusely, explaining it was a simple mistake on his part.Facing disappointment at the ceremony taught me three valuable lessons...1. Disappointments happen: Sometimes things don't go as planned, but how you handle it is what matters.2. Support is crucial: My family's encouragement meant a lot even when things didn't work out. 3. All of my social media feeds this week were filled with back to school messages. Some channels seem to think I'm an elementary school teacher, feeding me suggestions for "first day of school" activities including the familiar ice breaker - the classroom scavenger hunt. This activity directs students to find classmates that meet listed criteria - someone who has the same birthday month as you, who has the same favorite color as you, who has the same shoe size as you. While just a simple ice breaker, these directives to connect through "sameness" nagged at me. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating our commonality and weaving connections around experiences we all share. But we also need to be able to connect when we have almost nothing in common. At Global Nomads Group, we ask the question: what if we didn’t need a Venn diagram of sameness to connect, value and honor one another? What if we teach ourselves and model for our students, instead, to seek out, learn from, and celebrate those who are different from us? What if we showed them that even without much overlap between our locations, lived experiences, beliefs and values, we can still care about each other? What if we all committed to changing "what if" to "we must"?Here's to a great new school year for all of us!

All roads in life converge at one important point.In my son’s previous school, the children were taught to weigh every decision or action against the ‘Big 4’, before making or taking it. The Big 4 were questions they were to ask themselves quietly:- Is my action Fair?- Is it Kind?- Is it Safe?- Is it Respectful?Once they got through this list, the decision or action could be carried out or rejected. It was a simple way to make children pause, think and then act; all, according to their own free will, without anyone except their own inner voice guiding them. It worked beautifully!This playground ethic carries over to other places and situations and is as relevant for us adults as it is for primary school children. What if we too give the ‘Big 4’ a quick thought before any important decision or action, especially those which involve the ones around us? They say values are like fingerprints - every individual has unique ones but every individual also leaves a print of them wherever he or she goes. I say let’s be children again. Let’s give the Big 4 a chance!All roads in life converge at one important point. Are you taking the time to acknowledge your accomplishments, milestones and achievements? I have noticed that many very successful people have a hard time to slow down from constantly working, learning and doing, to enjoy what they have accomplished and who they have become in the process. Praise from others is brushed aside quickly, often they minimize the effort that was required to complete that task. Then they are off to the next challenge and when that’s completed they rush on to the next one. Often feeling empty when they have completed and probably uncomfortable with just being and not constantly doing. As kids we have a natural, innate desire and curiosity to explore, learn and do. When kids proudly show their parents what they have built or drawn something interesting happens. Many parents will right away show the child how to build a bigger block tower or how to draw something even better. Unwittingly they discount their child‘s achievements, not letting the child enjoy and be proud of what they did. Over time children get discouraged to even try, since it seems never good enough. Believes of:“ I am not good enough.“ or „I can’t do anything right.“ may be formed and strengthened every time someone just doesn’t acknowledge and simply enjoys a kids drawing by putting it on the fridge door. Children either stop trying or they keep trying to become the best, the one who works the hardest. Learning to be happy about our small and big accomplishments, taking time to celebrate and enjoying our milestones is something that adults can cultivate in their lives.
