De ADV Schoolboekhandel komt voort uit de Amsterdamse Debitanten-Vereeniging, later de Amsterdamse Boekverkopers Vereniging en de afdeling Amsterdam van de Nederlandse Boekverkopersbond. Als naamloze vennootschap ging de band met de gezamenlijke boekverkopers verloren. Op den duur fuseerde de ADV met andere schoolboekhandels. Het archief is fragmentarisch overgeleverd.

The school book shop ADV Schoolboekhandel developed from the retail organisation Amsterdamse Debitanten-Vereeniging, later the Amsterdamse Boekverkopers Vereniging (Amsterdam association of booksellers) and the Amsterdam branch of the Nederlandse Boekverkopersbond (Dutch association of booksellers). As a Limited company, the connection with the booksellers’ collective was gradually lost. The ADV eventually merged with other school books shops. The archive is not complete.

This collection consists of the largest part of the archive of the booksellers' guild – an association of fellow craftsmen including booksellers, book printers and bookbinders – in Amsterdam, which is a part of the 'Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak' (Library of the Book Trade). The archive contains correspondence, minutes, copies of petitions concerning book auctions, membership lists and privileges and ordinances of the guild. Besides this, there are 19th and 20th century records of the management of the archive. The collection offers insight into the history and organization of the book trade in Amsterdam and Holland from the 17th to the first decades of the 19th centuries.

Het doel van het collegie was drieledig: de gemeenschappelijke inkoop van antiquarische werken, de gezamenlijke handel in papier en antiquarische boeken, en de onderlinge distributie van nieuwe uitgaven. Het ledental schommelde rond de dertig. Het archief bevat reglementen, notulen, ledenlijsten, circulaires, financiële administratie en gelegenheidsgedichten, en maakt zo onderzoek mogelijk naar de handelspraktijken in de boekhandel in de achttiende en negentiende eeuw.

The 'Amsterdamsch Boekverkoopers Collegie', an association of Amsterdam's booksellers, was a cooperative organization of – mostly leading – booksellers. Its three main objectives were the joint buying of antiquarian works, the joint purchase of paper and antiquarian books, and the distribution of new editions among themselves. The number of members fluctuated at around thirty. The archive contains rules and regulations, minutes, membership lists, circulars, finances and occasional poems. The archive is a good source for the research of book trade in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The archive of the Amsterdamse Boekverkopersvereniging (Amsterdam booksellers’ association) has been patchily preserved. The minute books, which date from 1905 to 1952, constitute the oldest and at the same time the most important part of the archive. Most of the material dates from the years 1947-1951.

De Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak werd in 1845 opgericht als een vakbibliotheek voor leden van de Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels. Later werd het verzamelbeleid verbreed tot de documentatie van de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boekbedrijf. In 1958 werd de complete bibliotheek in bruikleen gegeven aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam. De collectie omvat een uitgebreide vakbibliotheek op gebied van het boekwezen (boekwetenschap, kopijrecht, typografie, grafische industrie, drukkerij, uitgeverij, boekhandel) en een grote verzameling bronnenmateriaal over de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boek (boekproductie, boekhandel, boekwezen). De archieven van Nederlandse boekbedrijven en brancheorganisaties, boekhandelscatalogi, letterproeven vormen een belangrijk deel van de collectie. De Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak is een van de meest omvangrijke en veelzijdige boekhistorische collecties ter wereld. Voor de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse boekbedrijf vanaf de zeventiende eeuw omvat de collectie essentiële bronnen en documentatie.

The 'Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak', the library of the Book Trade, was founded as a professional library for members of the 'Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des Boekhandels', the association promoting the interests of the book trade. Later the collection policy broadened and documentation on the history of the book trade was included. In 1958 the entire library was given on loan to the library of the University of Amsterdam. The collection contains an extensive professional library on books – including book history, copyright, typography, graphical industry, printing, publishing and book trade – and a large amount of source material about the history of books in the Netherlands – including the production of books, book trade and books in general. Important parts of the collection are the archives of Dutch book traders, booksellers' catalogues, catalogues of types and archives of printing businesses. Besides this, archives of a number of organizations and institutions active in the book trade are also kept. The library is one of the largest and most all-round book historical collections in the world. The collection contains essential sources and documents for the history of the Dutch book trade from the seventeenth century onwards.

The photography collection is derived from Boekblad, a Dutch book trade newspaper, and largely consists of black and white photographs and a number of colour photographs in various formats that were featured in the periodical between 1980 and 2007. The photos show authors from the Netherlands and abroad, booksellers and other people active in the book trade. Others show bookshops, national and international literary events and award ceremonies. The collection’s significance lies in the range of images that capture the process from book production and promotion to book distribution.

De particuliere bibliotheek van Jacob Buyck, Amsterdamse theoloog en laatste pastoor van de Oude Kerk voor de Alteratie. De voor zestiende-eeuwse begrippen zeer omvangrijke verzameling van ruim duizend banden werd bijeengebracht in de jaren 1573-1599. In 1632 werd deze boekerij opgenomen in de Stadsbibliotheek, die daarmee in omvang verdubbelde. Het overgrote deel (85 procent) van de gedrukte werken is nog altijd, en vaak in oorspronkelijke staat, aanwezig in de Bijzondere Collecties, die ook enkele van Buycks handschriften bezitten, waaronder een manuscriptcatalogus van zijn boekerij. De inhoud en samenstelling van Buycks boekerij zijn een spiegel van de leef- en denkwereld van een belangrijke en invloedrijke conservatieve, katholieke, Amsterdamse intellectueel in deze roerige periode van de Nederlandse geschiedenis.

This collection was the private library of Jacob Buyck, a theologian born in Amsterdam and the last parish priest of the Church in Amsterdam before the city joined the Alteratie in 1578. The collection consists of more than a thousand books, a very large collection for a single sixteenth century owner, and was assembled between 1573 and 1599. In 1632 the library was assimilated with the municipal Library, which became twice as large as a consequence. The majority of the printed material, about eighty-five percent, is still present at the Special Collections Department, mostly in original condition. There are a few manuscripts of Jacob Buyck himself, including a handwritten catalogue of his library. The content and composition of the library reflect the social and mental world of a conservative, catholic intellectual, both influential and important, living in Amsterdam in this turbulent period in Dutch history.

The book bags collection was started by Jacobus Cornelis (Sjaak) Hubregtse (1944-2007) and supplemented with a few more recent materials after his death. The collection consists of carrier bags made of different materials such as paper, plastic and linen, as provided by bookshops, book fairs, graphic and other companies, private foundations, museums, organizers of literary events, newspapers, periodicals, libraries, archives and educational institutions. The bags show a wide variety of typography, company names, commercial advertising, slogans and quotes. The often colourfully illustrated bags characterize the book trade’s promotional activities over the years.

The archive comes from the Koninklijke Nederlandse Uitgeversbond (KNUB; Royal Dutch Publishers’ Union). This union represented the shared interests of publishers at home and abroad. The archive consists of documents of meetings, minutes, project files and correspondence of the KNUB board, of the union office and of various committees and working and steering groups. The archive includes documents from the board and the committees of the five main divisions to have constituted the publishers’ union since 1973. These are the Groep Algemene Uitgevers (GAU; General Publishers), Groep Educatieve Uitgeverijen (GEU; Educational Publishers), Groep Importeurs (GIM; Importers), Groep Multimediale Uitgeverijen (GMU; Multimedia Publishers) and Groep Wetenschappelijke Uitgevers (GWU; Academic Publishers). Dit archief bevat de documenten van het Nederlandse filiaal dat in 1937 werd opgericht door Fritz Rosenthal en zijn vrouw Hilde Rosenthal-Wolf toen het joodse familiebedrijf in München noodgedwongen werd overgedragen aan een Arische eigenaar. Ludwig Rosenthal’s Antiquariat was founded in Germany in 1869. The archive contains the documents of the Dutch branch that had been established by Fritz Rosenthal and his wife Hilde Rosenthal-Wolf in 1937 when the Munich-based Jewish family firm had been forcibly turned over to an Aryan owner. The archive mainly contains administration and correspondence about the purchase and sale of books and collections from the years 1946-2005 and annotated catalogues from the start of this internationally renowned antiquarian firm.

C.P.J. van der Peet richtte eind jaren veertig in Indonesië en Amsterdam boekhandels en uitgeverijen op. Hij richtte zich in Indonesië op boeken voor het onderwijs en in Nederland op kinderboeken, dichtbundels en non-fictie. Vanaf 1956 was hij alleen nog in Nederland actief en startte hij ook een antiquariaat. Vanaf 1967 beperkte hij zijn activiteiten tot het antiquariaat. Het archief bevat veel productiedossiers van uit te geven publicaties, met werk van bekende schrijvers en illustratoren uit de periode 1949-1967, en is daarmee van belang voor het literair-historisch onderzoek naar die periode. Daarnaast bevat het archief een waardevolle selectie met de hand bijgeschreven antiquariaatscatalogi.

In the late 1940s, C.P.J. van der Peet established bookshops and publishing houses in Indonesia and in Amsterdam. In Indonesia he focused on books for the education market and in the Netherlands on children’s books, poetry volumes and non-fiction. From 1956 he was only active in the Netherlands, where he also began an antiquarian book business. From 1967 he devoted his attention exclusively to his rare bookshop. The archive contains a great number of production files of books that were scheduled to be published, including works by well-known authors and illustrators from the years 1949-1967, making it an important source for literary-historical research into the period. In addition the archive contains a valuable selection of annotated antiquarian catalogues.

The archive of an association of prospective book traders working in Amsterdam. The aim of the association was to increase the knowledge of its members of their trade and related professions, in particular literature. As such, the association organized weekly lectures, it distributed books and periodicals and founded a library. The archive contains the rules and regulations, library catalogues, excerpts of annual reports, minutes, portraits, manuscripts and correspondence.
