On the afternoon of April 21, 1836, roughly 1,000 men under General Sam Houston attacked General Antonio López de Santa Anna's camp along the banks of the San Jacinto River — trapping and defeating the larger Mexican force — ending Mexico's attempt to crush the rebellion.

Citizens of the new Republic of Texas responded to the destruction of the Alamo and massacre of the unarmed “Texians” captured at Goliad with outrage. Volunteer companies rushed to join General Samuel Houston's growing Texas army. Meanwhile, Mexican General Santa Anna marched his army to crush the Texan rebels.

It was fought near the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou in Texas. The Mexican general, Antonio López de Santa Anna, commanded a force of more than 1,200 men. The Texans, under General Sam Houston, had only about 910 men.
